a general kid update

I just haven’t felt like writing lately, which explains the lack of posts recently. I know my life hasn’t become dull or anything. The kids are still doing and saying funny things. I just haven’t had the energy to put it all down on “paper.” But today I’m going to try.

How about a kid update?

Lili: I made the mistake the other day of agreeing to play with her and her Barbie dolls. Now, she asks me everyday to play with her. I say mistake, but really I recognize it as a good thing. I’m spending more one on one time with her actually playing and it’s reminded me I should put more effort into actually playing with all of my kids. Playing with Barbie dolls also reminds me of the hours my sister and I would play when we were kids. I think tonight I might try to recreate some of the scenes she and I used to act out. So instead of going to the ball, maybe we’ll go to the skating rink. Of course, that depends on whether or not Miss Bossy Pants agrees to play it my way for a change.

Rowan: I’ve been trying to help him find that something he can be in to, something extra curricular. He played t-ball last year and even though he said it was fun he wasn’t interested in playing another season. In fact, he doesn’t want to play any sports. He tried out the tae kwon do class a couple of weeks ago and told me immediately after class that it wasn’t for him. I thought that was too bad because he seemed to have some natural ability. We talked a bit and I offered suggestions. When I asked him about art classes he lit up and said yes very emphatically. I’m not surprised. Some of his artwork lately has been amazing. So now I need to find an affordable and convenient art class. And I need to continue to ask him to lay off on the drawings of people getting their heads blown off.

Karlen: She is really becoming a mature young lady. In contrast to Rowan, she loves sports and has really excelled at tae kwon do. In fact, she recently finished her intro class and I just signed her up for a full year of classes. She’s also told me she wants to play basketball again in the fall/winter. She seems to be much more laid back lately, too. The other morning, as we were getting out of the car at her day camp, I noticed she was leaving her toast on the seat. I looked up to ask her if she wanted her toast and I noticed a big square grease spot on her butt. Ugh! She had completely forgotten about it and had been sitting on it! She laughed and then got it out of the car. When she saw how flat it was, she laughed even harder. Pretty good for a girl who suddenly didn’t have any breakfast.

All of the kids have asked for alone time with me and/or Bob. It’s so hard to find time to do that. I think playing barbies with Lili counts. I’m planning to take Karlen to lunch on Saturday. I just have to schedule something with Rowan.

On Sunday, we’re planning to go to a park for a picnic and hopefully some water play. Maybe we’ll even be able to fly some kites. I have a couple of state parks in mind and just need to make a final decision. Maybe I’ll narrow it down and then give Bob his choice. It is Father’s Day, afterall.
