Halloween is coming!

Yes, it has been a month since I posted anything here. I've been too busy to even think lately. Halloween is in 5 days and all three of the kids wanted me to make their costumes this year. Of course, I was honored and said yes. I'm not sure what I was thinking.

Thankfully, Rowan picked out something very easy to make. He's going to be a Jedi Knight. He's having some issues with having to use the light sabre he already has because it's the same color as Yoda's light sabre. He doesn't want anyone to be confused because he is not going as Yoda. I told him that Yoda doesn't own the rights to that particular color and besides, I'm not buying him another light sabre so deal with it. (Please don't tell him if Yoda does indeed own the rights to that color.)

I made Lili's costume first. She's going as a mermaid and if you ask her she'll tell you she's going as "Ariel's friend". She, too, doesn't want anyone to be confused because most people think that Ariel is the only mermaid that exists. We've already had an incident with this costume. After it was finished, I came downstairs one Saturday morning to find that she had put it on and was running in the street in it, dragging the tail behind her. So now her lovely blue tail has black streaks in it. I couldn't wash it because it has glitter all over it. Glitter I painstakingly applied in nice swirly spirals. At least the costume is getting used for more than just Halloween.

I am still working on Karlen's Elvish Warrior costume. Personally, I think an Elvis Warrior would be more interesting except that it doesn't have pointy ears. When Karlen looked through the Simplicity catalogue, she fell in love with this costume. It's an adult sized costume but I took Karlen's measurements and saw that she should fit into the size 6, the smallest size it comes in. When I got the skirt almost finished, she tried it on so I could adjust the elastic waist. That's when we noticed how incredibly short it was. Her butt was practically hanging out of the bottom. I guess that's what you get when you try to put a sexy adult costume on a ten year old girl. Luckily, I had some fringe from the material left over and sewed some extra fabric to the hem to make it longer. Last night, she tried on the top so I could mark where to put the collar and she asked if I could add some of the fringe to the bottom of the top to make it longer, too. I find it interesting that I have to make an adult sized costume bigger so that my ten year old can wear it. But I'm also thinking it would make a nice costume for me for next year! In my size, of course.

I have a few Halloween pictures posted on Flickr already. We carved pumpkins on Friday night and we've been working the past couple of nights to make our front porch as spooky as we can. The pumpkin pictures are up and I'll take some of our house tonight. I really want to get some more pictures of the pumpkins since they have turned so scarily fuzzy and gray over the past couple of days. That's what happens when you have lots of rain and 85 degree days. I'm afraid our pumpkins won't make it to Halloween.
